10 Questions for Magdalena Chovankova from THREESTYLE
I must have started kicking the bass drum in my mom’s belly! A bit later, around the age of five, I started on the piano, and at about 11 the saxophone and then flute and clarinet. And both of us - that’s me and my twin Gabriela, ThreeStyle’s drummer - used to sing in our mom’s choir.
2. Who was/is your biggest musical inspiration?
Chick Corea, David Sanborn (RIP), Marc Russo
3. Where do you make your home?
Actually, as musicians, we feel at home wherever we are performing! But currently we live in Croatia by the Adriatic Sea (we named one of our songs Adriatic Flow - you can see how beautiful Croatia is in this video on our YouTube channel )
4. Do you have any pets?
We used to have a dog when we were kids who was called Barynka. She was mixed breed, and we got her from animal shelter. This doggie was really smart and very good natured. She lived for 19 years and never bit anyone! Later on Robert and I had a dog we called Chumie (In Czech, Chumie is an affectionate word for a dog's snout.)
Chumi was also a rescue dog. She was a big dog and very protective of us. She often came on tour with us, and whenever we went off for a break she would stay on stage to guard our instruments. And now we have two kids of our own .
5. What is the best concert/gig you have ever done?\
So far Seabreeze jazz festival and Catalina jazz club in Hollywood but I think the best is yet to come and this will be in Canada . We can’t wait to come there soon … because Wave’s been playing our music for over a decade and we love our Canadian listeners plus we are good friends with Stu and Vickie so can’t wait to come visit and play.

6. What is the best concert you have ever attended?
The Jacksons
7. Do you have an all-time favourite song or album?
Yellowjackets - Samurai Samba, Slave to the Rhythm - Grace Jones and The Dream of the Blue Turtles. That’ s a tricky question to be asked because I cannot name just one … can I name more ? Like 100?
8. What musician would you still most like to work with?
I’m already working with my dream team - my own band! So my biggest dream’s come true and I am super happy! And another really big dream came true when we got to work with Jimmy Haslip (from my favorite band Yellowjackets - he is an absolutely amazing musician and incredible person.)
9. If you weren't a musician what would you be?
Maybe a teacher like my mom.
I think it is really important to do what you love as your profession. So besides music I love water, the sea, swimming, cooking and I love working with kids.
10. What is your favourite thing about Vancouver?
Vancouver’ s coolest vibe, our great fans, listeners and the whole Wave team.
