Smooth jazz sax icon, Euge Groove, returns with a new Billboard charting album that draws inspiration from those he loves, including his granddaughter and his dog! But The Phoenix is also an album that ultimately comes from a place of self-reflection and immense gratitude. To understand why, how about a little backstory?

Euge, whose real name is Steven Eugene Grove, was born in Hagerstown, Maryland. He started playing piano in Grade 2 and took up the sax at age 9. But decades later, in January 2025 he experienced a life-threatening health crisis that included open heart surgery. His amazing journey of recovery is the inspiration behind his 14th studio album.

There are 10 songs to enjoy, including “Wrapped Around Your Finger”, a sentimental gem inspired by his first grandchild. Another track, “Odysseus”, pays tribute to his cardiac-alert service dog whom he credits for saving his life.

 

 

In August, Euge returned to the stage for the first time since his health crisis and remarked that he felt 25 again! Some fans in the crowd pointed out that the pattern formed by his sweat on the back of his jacket resembled a phoenix rising. How fitting!

Euge Groove will be heading to Vancouver early this month to board the Celebrity Summit for Smooth Jazz Cruise III 2026 to LA. And guess who will be with him? Odysseus, the Bernedoodle, of course!
